Uses of Laparoscopy in OB-GYN

Dr. Regina Edmond is the president of her self-named obstetrics and gynecological practice in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Edmond earned her doctorate of medicine at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 2002. Throughout her career, Regina Edmond has gained extensive experience with surgeries, including operations involving laparoscopies.

The laparoscopic intervention is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose problems in the abdomen and female reproductive system. Instead of using a large incision, this method involves making a small cut at the navel and sometimes other locations. The surgeon inserts the laparoscope, a narrow lighted tube that can be used to locate problem areas. This technology often enables patients to be in and out of the hospital the same day, allowing them to quickly return to daily activities.

The laparoscope can be used for a number of procedures, including removal of abnormalities such as tumors. Other applications include myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids) and removal of scar tissue and injured tubes. Laparoscopic tools can additionally be used for a total hysterectomy, as well as treatment of pelvic or ovarian cysts.
